Australian Company to Start Bone Stem Cell Clinical Trials

Australian Company to Start Bone Stem Cell Clinical Trials

The Australian Financial Review reports today that the biotech company Mesoblast has received approval to begin trials of adult human stem cells to generate new bone growth. Up to 10 patients will be selected for the trial at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, which is expected to begin in eight to ten weeks.

Medical News Net reported last February that Mesoblast would be using Mesenchymal Precursor Cells (MPCs) obtained from Cell Therapies Pty Ltd. At the time of the agreement, Mesoblast founder Silviu Itescu said, “Importantly, this agreement also enables Mesoblast to conduct human pilot clinical trials on behalf of United States-based company, Angioblast Systems Inc, in which it holds a 33.3% equity stake. These additional trials will focus on the use of MPCs for the treatment of patients with cardiac and vascular diseases.”

I really like this company's mission:

"Mesoblast's goal is to greatly improve the quality of life for people suffering from bone, cartilage and joint diseases"

Since your post doesn't describe in detail what Mesoblast does exactly I thought I would add it. Mesoblast Limited is an Australian biotechnology company devoted to the development of new treatments for orthopaedic conditions, including the rapid commercialisation of a adult stem cell technology that strives for the regeneration and repair of bone and cartilage.
