Financial Forecast for Stem Cell Research

Consultants Michael Steiner and Nils Behnke, with Bain & Company, have come up with a forecast of $100 million market for stem cell therapies by the end of the decade, according to an article in today’s Economist. Bain estimates there are 140 stem cell products in development, but more than 80% of them are in early stage developments prior to clinical trials.

The article goes on to note that restrictions on funding in the United States and parts of Europe are slowing research. Most stem cell-funding comes from government entities; only $50 million in venture capital from private investors was put into the field last year.
