Stem Cell Researchers Win Lasker Prize
The 2005 Lasker Awards for medical research are going to scientists who discovered stem cells or did other significant work on the human genome. Drs. Ernest McCulloch and James Till, who discovered cells in the human spleen that were able to become red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets, are 2 of the recipients. 2 British scientists, Sir Edwin Southern and Sir Alec Jeffreys, who respectively discovered "Southern blotting" and developed DNA fingerprinting, are 2 other recipients. The New York Times covered the story, as did the Tallahasee Democrat.
